joinerydatabase
The project “Timber Joinery Database” was launched to preserve and expand the knowledge of timber joints. The aim of this project is to create an open source online platform that documents both traditional and innovative timber joinery. This project was motivated by the intention to connect the past and the future of the timber construction.
The development of the database involved several key steps. First, the platform was carefully structured and designed to provide a user-friendly and accessible interface. Particular attention was paid to the technical concept. In the initial stage, the first entries were integrated into the database in order to evaluate and test them. These entries served as the basis for the ongoing implementation and analysis of connections. The database enableds continuous analysis and development of wooden joints, including the production of physical models that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods.
As the database evolves, more parameters and a parametric framework are added, providing user-specific customization options and ensuring the relevance and applicability of the database to current and future wood joining practices.
This project represents a fusion of tradition and innovation. Through the use of digital tools and open source principles, the field of timber joining was further advanced so that users can benefit from both traditional craftsmanship and modern technologies. The “Timber Joinery Database” has already been successfully implemented in several teaching modules at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical Uiversity in Delft and Universitiy of Applied Sciences Cologne.
This project forms the first building block for a more comprehensive “TimberConstruction Database”, which will include timber construction projects, construction systems and a material library in addition to connections. This further development is currently being carried out in cooperation with the BK-Wood Group at TU Delft
